Landscape Investigations (JUN 7-28)

$250.00

Meeting Times: Saturdays 9AM - 1PM
Location: Options include Tower Grove Park, Forest Park, Oak Knoll Park, Concordia Seminary (Meeting locations will be decided closer to the beginning of the course)

Nature offers us endless lessons on image making and our temperaments as seer-seekers. Working from landscapes, participants will discover the changing light as a contributing factor to their process of creating. From translating one’s experience onto a canvas, participants will also learn to explore temperature, rhythm, and values, all of which play a role in how a painting breathes and lives.

Emphasis will be placed upon the formal elements of painting that constitute a dynamic composition, as well as the properties of colors and thereby the expressive qualities of color relationships. As we approach the landscape each week, participants will be challenged to be honest about the needs of the painting and be vulnerable in asking questions and seeing truthfully.

For this workshop, we recommend using acrylics or gouache for the ease of transportation and clean up. However, water-soluble oil paint is also a great alternative.

Recommended supplies:

  • French easel (We recommend using a french easel, but if you would like a cheaper option this would also work.

  • Acrylic palette or paper plate

  • Paint brushes
    - Filbert sizes 4 & 8
    - Additional brushes (even ugly old brushes) if you have them

  • Acrylic Paint set:
    - Option #1: Liquitex Professional Heavy Body Acrylic Paints - Landscape, Set of 6, Assorted Colors, 59 ml tubes and a tube of black paint.
    - Option #2: Golden Open Acrylics - Landscape, Set of 8 with Thinner, a tube of black paint, and an additional tube of white.
