Certificates

“I studied at JPA for two years, and it was such a life-changing journey. I’m so grateful to have studied under two passionate painters and educators, Misa and Jacob. Across the time, Misa and Jacob guided me through different perspectives of the visual world. More importantly, these new perspectives opened my eyes and cultivated my sensibility. As these new ideas grew within me, they provided pathways to deeper insights into art and life. To me, it’s about relationships, forms, and the realm of the poetic.

As one of their students, I can definitely say that Misa and Jacob are amazing at discovering and accommodating the various characteristics and traits of their students. As the old saying goes, "All roads lead to Rome." Their sincere and humble guidance helped us engage with art in our own ways. Their teaching is such a good remedy for this current restless world. In JPA, It’s not about those cold, mechanical “how-to” methods, but about warm, humanly authentic seeing and experiencing.” — Neo Y.

Program Requirements and Certificate Criteria

To be eligible for a certificate, students must remain actively enrolled for the full duration of the two-year program. This includes continuous participation in consecutive cohort sessions and intensive marathon workshops.

Measurable Goals and Expectations:

  1. Artistic Development:

    • By the end of the program, participants should show a distinct personal sense of plasticity—the ability to manipulate form, color, and space with confidence and intentionality.

  2. Historical and Critical Context:

    • Students are expected to develop a working knowledge of art history, with a focus on movements, figures, and ideas relevant to their own practice.

    • They should be able to verbally articulate their artistic intent and contextualize their work within historical and contemporary frameworks. This will be assessed through discussions during critiques.

  3. Critique and Exhibition Standards:

    • There will be three critiques/assessments spread out over a period of two years. The critiques will involve at least three other artists and are an opportunity to discuss how successfully the student’s intentions are being communicated in their work.

    • A minimum of 70% of works included in final critiques and exhibitions must be created outside of regular class hours, demonstrating independent initiative and self-directed practice.
