  • From Photography to Painting: A Deepened Understanding of Art

    “My experience learning with Jacob and Misa has been incredibly rewarding. The first thing that struck me was how friendly they both are, but by the end of our first class I was blown away by their passion as artists and educators. I loved their holistic approach—letting each student grow into their own voice. Their critiques were always substantive and helpful without steering me toward a specific style, and they often suggested artists whose work could inform and contextualize my own. As someone without much formal art history education, I found their approach extremely approachable rather than overwhelming.

    As a photographer of twenty years, I’d always suspected I would enjoy oil painting. Before leaving STL to pursue an MFA in photography, I took a friend’s recommendation and enrolled in their Summer Intensive Cohort. I discovered a new love for charcoal and oil, and their lessons on composition, figure, structure, and color deepened my understanding of visual fundamentals. I’m already noticing shifts in how I see my photographic process, and it’s exciting to explore a new medium that transforms something I thought I knew so well. Who knows—maybe I should have been a painter all along.”

    “I studied at JPA for two years, and it was such a life-changing journey. I’m so grateful to have studied under two passionate painters and educators, Misa and Jacob. Across the time, Misa and Jacob guided me through different perspectives of the visual world. More importantly, these new perspectives opened my eyes and cultivated my sensibility. As these new ideas grew within me, they provided pathways to deeper insights into art and life. To me, it’s about relationships, forms, and the realm of the poetic.

There is no one-size-fits-all. At Janes and Pang Atelier, our tools are designed to support each artist’s individual sensibilities and voice.

From start to finish, we curate an educational experience that is highly informed, experimental, and playful. Our approach combines perception training, tonal structure, color resonance, visual hierarchy, plasticity,  historical art foundations, and  individualized critiques to help students build a strong foundation to pursue any direction— realism, abstraction, design, personal expression, or all of the above.
