Figurative Workshops
We work with a diverse group of students that range from high school and undergraduate students, graphic designers, avid and experienced painters to retirees with interest in learning. In the studio, members explore concepts of plasticity, color resonance, perceptual depth and spatial relationship through figuration. Often times, we mistake figuration as merely the representation. However, as one observes and places marks within the confines of four edges, they may discover that shapes and form emerge as a result of visual search-and-response. This interaction of colors and shapes, is what we call figure ground relationship. To learn how to paint is to understand the difference between light and shadow, warm and cool tones, and ultimately, the hierarchy of information which constitutes an experience of the world that is being presented by the artist’s point of view. Our goal is to teach the foundations of visual perception and expression of lived and felt experiences.
