Seeing Slowly: Sketching at the Garden (JUN 27, 2026)
Meeting time: June 27, 9 - 11 AM
Location: Missouri Botanical Garden (We will meet at the main lobby)
“Realize the value of putting down your first impression quickly.” — Charles Webster Hawthorne
Drawing in a sketchbook is an intimate act of presence — a way of slowing down, noticing, and engaging with the world around us. In this one-day workshop, participants will explore techniques that make drawing approachable, spontaneous, and deeply rewarding, even amidst the busyness of daily life.
Open to all levels of experience, this class focuses on the relationship between seeing and responding — how simple marks can both construct and express our perceptual experiences. Through a series of structured prompts, we’ll practice working quickly from observation, developing confidence in line, proportion, and structure while gaining sensitivity to rhythm and composition. Participants can expect to walk away with renewed appreciation for drawing medium and visual awareness of how the three-dimensional world translates to the two-dimensional surface (plasticity).
Whether you’re new to drawing or looking to rekindle your sketchbook habit, this workshop offers practical tools and gentle structure to bring drawing back into your everyday life.
Supplies needed:
Sketchbook (recommended sizes: between 6 × 9” to 9 × 12”)
Graphie pencils (2B, 4B, 6B)
Eraser
Ballpoint pen
Exacto knife for sharpening pencils / pencil sharpener
