Clothed Figure Painting Workshop (MAR 22 - APR 12)

$275.00

Meeting Times: Sundays 1-4:30PM

The figurative sessions are our most popular course at JPA and have a history of filling up quickly. Each meeting we work from a live model for 2.5 hours, followed by 30 minutes of discussion about the works made during this time. The conversations involve everything from art history and philosophy to form and proportion. These meetings are a space for individuals to explore their own curiosities as artists, and discuss ideas freely with others who can offer a a range of observations and insights. While any mediums and all levels are welcomed, we do however, recommend that participants have some figure drawing experiences prior to taking this course in order to maximize their learning experience.

To better assist participants’ understanding of pictorial devices and visual mechanics of image construction, we will supplement each course with one transcription session where they will draw from a master painting of their choice.

Topics of exploration include:
Plasticity, Color Resonance, Composition and Visual Hierarchy, and more

Supplies for Painting:

  1. Brushes* (Have at least 2 or 3 brushes ranging in size and shape)

  2. Rags

  3. Paint (Oil paint set, Gouache, OR Acrylic)
A purchased paint set will work well for this class, or if you already have paints that is fine. We recommend having at least a black, titanium white, yellow ochre, burnt sienna, and ultramarine Blue. Any paint set that remotely resembles this list or includes additional colors is enough to get started.

  4. Medium (Linseed oil and gamsol/mineral spirits for oil painting)

  5. Palette knife (#62)

  6. Surfaces:

    • a 5×7”, 9×12”, or 11×14” value pack is a good start for acrylic or oil

    • 140 lb watercolor paper is good for gouache

  7. 2 glass jars with lids (for oil painting)

  8. Lava soap

  9. Rubber gloves (recommended for oil)

Easels, palettes, and drawing boards will be provided at the studio.
