Class Meeting: Every Sunday 10AM to 12:30PM
*Materials included
Understanding perspective is essential for artists. It provides the tools to organize space, guide the viewer’s eye, and create convincing depth on a flat surface. Mastery of perspective strengthens drawing accuracy, supports imaginative world-building, and deepens awareness of historical and cultural approaches to depicting space. By exploring both traditional linear systems and alternative methods like Byzantine perspective, students gain confidence and flexibility in how they construct images and communicate meaning in their work.
This perspective drawing class explores multiple ways artists represent space and depth. Students will learn the fundamentals of one-point and two-point linear perspective, using vanishing points and horizon lines to construct believable environments and architectural forms. The course also introduces Byzantine (reverse) perspective, examining how spatial logic can be intentionally altered to create symbolic or spiritual emphasis. In addition, students will study atmospheric perspective, using value, color, and contrast to suggest distance and depth in landscapes and complex scenes. Through demonstrations, observational exercises, and creative projects, participants will experiment with these approaches to expand their understanding of how perspective shapes visual storytelling. Each class will involve close observation of artworks, short demonstration, and hands-on practice and discussion at the end.
