Straightedge Still Life Drawings w/ Sam Kelly

Sign up HERE

Workshop is free to attend but requires a 40 dollar deposit which will be refunded upon attendance.
Supplies Included.

During this workshop students will be drawing directly from observation using the still life motif as their subject. Students will learn how to create drawings using straight lines only. During the drawing process students will rely on using rulers to make straight lines. Representing the world in a new way will provide the opportunity for creative growth and experimentation. Working in this process will teach students to focus more on accurately observing the subject, rather than on trying to render the objects in a “realism” style or manner. Students will be encouraged to explore the additive and subtractive processes. Key topics will include measuring, space, line, and composition. The goal for this workshop is to explore new ways of drawing and to be surprised by the results.

Customer Appreciation

JPA is collaborating with Chatetalks to present a free public event, where we sip tea and make drawings from a clothed live model from 9am to 1pm.

This is our way of showing appreciation to the community and offering a slice of artful meditation on a weekend morning. Our door will be open to all. No registration necessary. Bring a sketchpad and some drawing tools and you’re good to go.

Mark LaRiviere: Sculpting the Head

Sign up HERE

Workshop is free to attend but requires a 40 dollar deposit which will be refunded upon attendance.
Supplies Included.

Led by New York based artist Mark LaRiviere, participants will gain insights into form and perception through the act of sculpting.
This workshop will teach students to create 3-dimensional clay studies of the head from life.  Students will work from a model that rotates positions allowing students to see all sides of the model’s head.  We will concentrate on form, mass and shape before moving to facial features and hair. Students will learn the importance of building a sculpture that includes finding rhythms within the forms, and movement across the surface of their work.

“How to Paint Instinctually” w/ Gus Hoffman

In this workshop students will be asked to focus on the competing, contradictory impulses that make up their individual practice and encouraged to see these different voices as strengths and not weaknesses. We will work primarily from life but other source material is allowed (and encouraged) if students feel stuck.

In the first part of class students will begin with some reflective writing. Students will be asked to consider their own practice from a bird's eye view: what are the different painting voices that continually show up when they paint? What are they most confident about ? What are they most terrified of? From here, students will develop short term exercises or "creative impediments" to help them focus on the areas of their practice that need the most work. The instructor will also provide his own creative impediments as examples. In the second part of class , students will paint from observation, employing some of the exercises they themselves have developed. Class will end with students discussing what they learned and where they feel their practice needs to go.
