Fostering Sensitivity

towards the Language of Painting

  • "Their workshop is a clinic in composition, observation, and color as light."

  • "Through attending JPA's workshops and classes, I've benefited from so many aspects of formal art education that I've never been able to access before."

  • "People who have known me for years notice a real change and progression in my newer work. JPA is a huge part of that development for me."

  • "Jacob and Misa are so wonderful about focusing on individual students and what they want to accomplish, and helping them get there."

  • "JPA is a perfect place to explore, experiment with new mediums and techniques, and get inspired with a community of supportive, like-minded artists."

At JPA, we believe that visual foundations should remain relevant throughout an artist’s education and career, just as they have throughout thousands of years of art history. Our goal is to provide students a robust learning environment that fosters lifelong inquiry and engagement of aesthetics.

  • Faculty

Misato received her BA in Studio Art from CUNY Brooklyn College, MFA in Painting from the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Misato moved to the United States when she was 17 years old. As a Japanese-Chinese-American, her work contains a mixture of cultural influences and visual pursuits that serve as a springboard for discovery— both of pictorial language as well as her own heritage.

Most memorable experience of art: Seeing Matisse’s Retrospective at the MoMA in 2015.

  • Faculty

Jacob received his BFA in Painting from Lindenwood University and MFA in Painting from Marywood University.

Besides being a painter, Jacob is also a lifelong wrestler, returned Peace Corps Volunteer, and mediocre skateboarder. His paintings are figurative poems; playful, simplistic abstractions of common subjects, born from a sense of necessity. The culmination of marks and erasure that remain visible in his work reflect the process of his inquiry and curiosity towards the mechanics of image making and how the mind both creates and perceives.

Most memorable experience of art: Seeing Titian’s painting at SLAM in 2011.
